“Cocktail College” is brought to you today by Tanqueray. I don’t know about you, listener, but I’m one of those people who needs a mobile app to track my budget. And I’m going to let you in on a little secret: I actually have a line item on mine marked “Tanqueray.” It’s true! Because I’m a gin Martini drinker, and Tanqueray is my Martini gin. I’m not ashamed to admit it — I have a Tanqueray monthly budget. But it’s not just for Martinis. No, I turn to Tanqueray for any of the gin classics because it always delivers on that classic London dry profile. You know, Tanqueray is not like a good friend. It’s like a best friend, a dependable stalwart that always delivers. Now, if you’re looking for cocktail inspiration, well, you know you’ve come to the right place. But if you’re looking for something tailored specifically for Tanqueray, you should head over to www.tanqueray.com now because you know what, listener? When it comes to gin cocktails, you deserve the best.
Recently here at VinePair, we worked on an exciting project called Negroni Knockout. The concept was simple. We picked 16 New York bars known for their Negronis, tasted said drinks, and then pitted them against each other in a bracket system to find the best version of the drink here in the Big Apple. While we’re not going to give away any spoilers about who won, it got us thinking about what makes a truly great Negroni. How much should a bar stick to the original formula? And what are the subtle tweaks you can make to put your own stamp on the drink without losing the spirit of a true Negroni?
Another thing it got us thinking is that it’s about time we dive into the archives and pull out one of our all-time favorite conversations here on “Cocktail College.” That was, of course, our chat with Mr. Jeffrey Morgenthaler of Portland, Ore.’s Pacific Standard.
On this episode of “Cocktail College,” Morgenthaler schools us on how to perfect the Negroni and explains how his barrel-aged version became a national — and international — phenomenon. Tune in for more.
