The VinePair Podcast: Will Gen Z Make Rum Happen?

Despite many years of hope and possibility, rum has never really caught on with millennials.

Generally speaking, the spirit is an acquired taste and is often served on specific occasions. Its reputation for being saccharine and cloying certainly isn’t helping matters. But in reality, it’s not all Captain Morgan, sticky-sweet Strawberry Daiquiris, and jungle juice. Rum is a vast spirit category that encompasses a range of unique and wonderful flavors. It may not have a standard-bearer country or cuisine like tequila does, but will the next generation of drinkers look past rum’s old stigmas and embrace everything it has to offer?

On this episode of the “VinePair Podcast,” Adam, Joanna, and Zach discuss whether Gen Z is a more receptive audience for rum’s charms, or if the same challenges that have held the category back with older drinkers will remain a problem with younger ones. Tune in for more.

Zach is drinking: 2001 Domaine Marcel Deiss Pinot Blanc
Joanna is drinking: Breaking Bread Wines “Marmalade” Orange Wine
Adam is drinking: Ravines Wine Cellars Pinot Noir
